Recent advances and future directions for the application of Cd-free-QDs in display applications – from synthesis into device

After the very profound overview of Jonathan Steckel about colloidal QD technology in general (recommended as basis for this masterclass), this class will dive deeper into the technical details of synthesis, structure and application of Cd-free QDs in displays. Cd-free QDs have gained a lot of attention due to the heavy regulation of Cd-based QDs by the Restrictions of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, but are still not as well researched as Cd-based QD systems. We will take a look back at recent advances but also potential challenges that are lying ahead of us, based on literature and our own experiences.
In the first part, we will discuss different synthesis techniques as well as QD-structures and how they can affect the performance in photoluminescence (PL) or electroluminescence (PL) display applications. In the second part we will talk about important boundary conditions for PL and EL application, point out important EL device mechanisms as well as present an introduction to QD processing via printing technologies.
